Reflections from StocExpo 2026: pragmatism, diversification and resilience
Last week I attended StocExpo 2026 in Rotterdam – and what a fantastic couple of days it was.
It’s always great to connect with so many faces across the tank storage community, but what really stood out this year was the quality (and honesty) of the conversations happening both on stage and across the exhibition floor.
A big theme throughout the event was the growing sense of pragmatism around the energy transition. While momentum is still there, the tone has clearly shifted. As one speaker put it, “sentiment moves faster than reality,” and the industry is now finding a more balanced path between maintaining security of supply and progressing towards a lower-carbon future.
There was also a strong focus on diversification and flexibility. Whether it’s ports actively “bringing in new molecules” or terminals investing in infrastructure that allows them to remain “product agnostic,” it’s clear that the ability to adapt to changing product flows is becoming a defining strength. In an increasingly uncertain market, those with the most flexible assets will be best placed to respond.
That uncertainty was another recurring theme. With ongoing geopolitical tensions and rapidly shifting trade dynamics, volatility is becoming the norm rather than the exception. The message was clear: “options and optionality are key,” and building resilience into infrastructure and supply chains is now a priority across the sector.
Perhaps most striking, however, was just how central the tank storage sector has become in today’s global context. As one speaker noted, “bulk storage in Europe has never been more important,” underlining the critical role the industry plays in maintaining supply and supporting energy security during periods of disruption.
Events like StocExpo really highlight the importance of collaboration across the industry. Bringing together operators, investors, policymakers and technology providers in one place creates the kind of conversations that genuinely move things forward, and it’s clear there is a real appetite to work together to navigate what comes next.
Already looking forward to next year.
