Reflections on StocExpo 2025: Insight, Innovation, and Inspiration

March 20, 2025

The 20th edition of StocExpo, the world’s leading tank storage and energy infrastructure event was held last week in Rotterdam. It brings together industry leaders, innovators, and policymakers to address the most pressing challenges and opportunities in the sector.

From future fuels and emissions reduction to hydrogen’s role in heavy industry, the conversations throughout the event reinforced one key theme: the industry is in a state of transformation.

A Time of Change for the Storage Industry

Opening the conference, Bruno Hayem, chairman of FETSA, reminded us of the critical role storage will play in the energy transition. As the world faces geopolitical uncertainty, shifting energy policies, and increasing environmental regulations, the importance of energy security has never been more evident.

The discussions at the Clean Ammonia Storage Conference, the Future Fuels Stage, and panels on hydrogen and emissions control highlighted just how much progress has been made – but also how far we still have to go.

One of the standout panels, “How Far Can Hydrogen Take Us?”, brought together experts who provided a realistic assessment of hydrogen’s potential in the energy mix. While the technology holds huge promise for decarbonising refining, steel production, and aviation, significant challenges remain, particularly in cost, infrastructure, and securing investment. The consensus? Hydrogen is coming, but its widespread adoption will require long-term commitment, smarter policies, and a shift in how investors approach energy projects.

Similarly, in the session “20 Years of Emissions Control,” the panelists reminded us that while zero emissions may not be feasible, ensuring that emissions have minimal impact is a goal within reach. Industry leaders emphasized that waiting for regulations is not an option – companies must take proactive steps toward sustainability now.

Technology and Innovation Taking Centre Stage

One of the most exciting aspects of StocExpo 2025 was seeing how technology is transforming the industry. The Sprint Robotics demonstrations provided a glimpse into the future of tank inspection and maintenance, showcasing autonomous robots and drones designed to enhance safety, efficiency, and reliability.

A Story of Resilience: Nicolas Hamilton’s Powerful Message

Beyond the industry discussions, one of the most inspiring moments of the event came from Nicolas Hamilton, British Touring Car driver and guest motivational speaker at StocExpo. Born with cerebral palsy and told he would never walk unaided, Hamilton defied the odds and carved out a successful career in motorsport.

His story of overcoming adversity, breaking down barriers, and refusing to accept limitations was a powerful reminder of what is possible with resilience and determination.

Looking Ahead

If there’s one key takeaway from StocExpo 2025, it’s that change is inevitable, but how the industry responds to it that will define its future. Whether it’s embracing new technologies, securing investment for low-carbon fuels, or strengthening global collaboration, everyone has a role to play in shaping what comes next.

Here’s to the next 20 years of innovation, progress, and resilience.
